I got a sample of Laura Mercier's Full Blown Volume Lash Building Mascara sometime ago and had completely forgotten to try it.

Full Blown Volume Lash Building Mascara

Dramatically thickens, lengthens, curls and sculpts lashes with each stroke. The lightweight, nutrient-infused formula leaves lashes super-shiny, soft and clump-free all day long.

Ingredients

(Black): Water, Acrylates Copolymer, Glyceryl Stearate, Stearic Acid, Synthetic Beeswax, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, PVP, Paraffin, Aminomethyl Propanediol, C18-36 Acid Triglyceride, Lecithin, Propylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Sodium Laureth-12 Sulfate, Potassium Sorbate, Edta, Benzyl Alcohol, Gossypium Herbaceum (Cotton) Powder, Olea Europaea (olive) Fruit Oil, Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Oil, Panthenol, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Oil. (+/-) Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxide (CI 77499), Ferric Ferrocyanide, Ferric Ammonium Ferrocyanide, Carmine, Ultramarines, Bismuth Oxylchloride, Chromium Oxide Greens, Chromium Hydroxide Green.

The mascara went on smoothly and noticed right a way the forumla has a sheen to it. When applied to lashes, you'll notice some shine added to them. The mascara was more lengthening than volumizing for me. The volumizing part of the formula fell flat as I couldn't comb out my lashes and they began to clump where several of my lashes clumped to form a single thicker lash.

In the photo to the left, you'll see what I mean about the clumping with several lashes. This happens to some extent on all the mascaras but my favorites are, of course to a lesser extent. The clumping isn't terrible and from the side my lashes still looked lush and full.

Inpsite of some clumping, the mascara is very smooth making it easy to apply on and comb through the lashes. My lashes did curl up a bit more so I found their claim in this to be valid.

The bristles and placement are medium length ones seperated into dense bunches variety. It is easy to comb through your lashes with the product but the build up and subsequently combing-out of the lashes is not very effective.

I will continue to use this mascara until it dries out because while it's not one of my favorites, it does provide acceptable length and volume for me. I cannot tell if the clumping is a result of the forumla or a poorly paired brush wand, because while the product glides on smoothly, is not easily manipulatable with the wand applicator. It's all very contradicting you see as this is advertised as a "Volume Lash Building Mascara". The product as expected should be very easy to work through but I found the sculpting (comb-out) part to fall flat.

As always, try to grab a sample or at least try a mascara at the store before buying a tube. I could see this formula working for others even if it doesn't totally work for me.

  1. As Sephora does not seem to carry the D.J.V. (Deja Vu) Fiberwig anymore and although I have since helped my wife order the Japan import available on Amazon, we'd like a local source.
We're trying to find an equivalent for my wife and so I can also cut down the number of trips I have to make to the mall for her; and also some embarrassment when I have to ask to try some of them out.
-We have tried Laura Mercier's Full Blown Volume Lash Building Mascara as well. The clumping was persistent is our purchase as well. Glides on well enough - I suspected it was a brush design. This product runs and ends up giving what I call the panda eye effect - a heavy panda eye effect rather frequently.
-The Dior Iconic Waterproof series seems "okay" for length and a little volume and runs only a little. The light panda eyes only need a q-tip every few hours. okay/acceptable if there aren't better.
-Lancome's Hypnose Drama was similair to the Dior one I just mentioned. Also okay/acceptable but still looking for better.
-YSL's Faux Cils gave my wife panda eyes after several blinks. Clumping seemed persistent in this product as well.
If I knew what I know now, I would of gone to beauty school and studied cosmetics instead. . . But nonetheless, any assistance in product comparison to the D.J.V. Fiberwig would be appreciated.

    1. Hi Khal. You're very welcome. I am happy that you have found these reviews to be helpful. It's a shame Sephora no longer carries d.j.v. fiberwig. If you haven't come across a good locally produced alternative for your wife you can consider ordering from Rakuten.com. They are selling d.j.v. for slightly cheaper.

Unforuntely, I haven't ordered from them so I can't tell you what they are like but they are the largest online retailer in Japan and have made the move to become an International online retailer in the past few years.

There is another fiber mascara that I reviewed on here. Smashbox's Full Exposure Mascara if you haven't read it yet.

If your wife is open to trying non-fiber mascaras, I've had good results from this one and it's slightly more waterproof which hopefully would reduce giving your wife panda eyes too soon.

Aside from these, there are two drug store brands that are also fiber mascaras. I've heard good things about them but haven't got a chance to try them out. One is Maybelline Illegal Lengths Fiber Extensions Mascara and the other is L'Oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lashes Black Lacquer Mascara.

  2. Oh - and thank you for all the various product(s) you've reviewed! It was helpful and yes, we've found the D.J.V. Fiberwig a very cost effective product that's superior to many out there. It is our standard we hold all other mascara's too for our needs.

    1. Good luck with your search. Let me know if you come across something else that works for her.

And I found that I liked Stila's Stay All Day Waterproof Volumizing mascara. Reviewed it here. It's a non-fiber forumla but got me quite a bit of volume with not a lot of clumping.
