False Eyelash Talk 1 - What are they, how much they cost and how to choose your pair.

It took me a long time before I decided to write a post on false eyelashes. For the longest time, I just couldn't think of anything interesting and informative I could say to help my readers decide on a fun pair of lashes for any occassion.

But I think by now I have enough experience after trying various false lash sets that I can provide some opinions and tips on how to choose, put on, take care of your lashes and what to expect from using them.

False eyelashes look, for the most part, very exaggerated. It's been a hot makeup trend for the past 5-6 years so a lot of people have grown accostumed to them and even if you're all about very natural-looking makeup, you can still enjoy subtle enhances with the right pair of natural-looking false lashes.

False Lashes Tips Reviews Lashes Care Lash Cost

Why Would I Want False Eyelashes?

False Eyelashes are a great way to transform an "ordinary" makeup look to something with a boost of pazazz.  With them, you'll have these big luscious lashes that gives you that extra sumthin' sumthin' for special occasions. Your eyes will stand out in photos and believe me, people will be staring and admiring!

You're not going to want or need lashes all the time. I never ever put any on when I'm going out during the day or just doing something casual. If you do get hooked to using them everyday for personal or work (yes, some places make it a requirement!), consider something subtle.

Gi & Gary Fresh Collection Flattering Nude Lashes

Thees are Gi & Gary Fresh Collection Flattering Nude Lashes. The lashes are not dense and each fiber is pretty thin. While they may look dramatic in the photo, they are anything but when you have them on, they blend in very easily with your own lashes. This is what I would consider subtle lashes.

I got into using false lashes when I did television work and modeling. Now, I just put them on for fun. It could cost as little as $3 US to buy a pair that comes with glue so you don't need to shell out a lot just to try. Remember if you've never applied them on before, it's going to take a few tries. Follow the instructions provided if there are any. It's perfectly do-able to apply them with bare hands. Don't think you need to buy an applicator. I will write a post on how to apply lashes later.

What kind of lashes works for me? Should I choose over-the-top or something more subtle?

Both and everything inbetween!  False eyelashes are as effective for photoshoots and all that glamorous stuff as they are for an evening out.

If you're going to wear false lashes during the day, I'd recommend something subtle that blends in with your own lashes. If you're going out clubbing or to a party, pretty much any kind will work. And if you're going to a fancy date or event, I usually prefer more voluminous ones made from soft fibers. These ones give a look of volume and length that is soft and easy on the eyes.

Gi & Gary Hollywood Glamour False Eyelashes Review Tips CareJapanese False Eyelashes Feathery look reviews tip care
The ones on the left are Gi & Gary's Classic Collection Hollywood Glamour and on the right are made Japanese lashes (made in Korea) by Bi Foie luxurious Black Lash. These two sets of lashes are quite different from each other even though they are about the same lash length. I would consider both dramatic lashes. Bi Foie lashes are softer to the touch and more feathery (hence on the packaging it says "big-eyed feathery look") while Hollywood Glamour lash fibers are thicker. They also look a tad more dramatic which may or may not be a good thing depending on the look you want.

Japanese False Eyelashes criss-cross reviews tip care
Third set of dramatic lashes. The fibers are thicker than Bi Foie's and somewhat similar to Hollywood Glamour but the fibers are grouped less densely and some even criss-cross providing a slightly different dramatic look.

Shu Uemura False Eyelash Smoky Layers 007 Review Tips CareJapanese False Eyelashes soft fibers look reviews tip care
Lashes on the left are Shu Uemura's False Eyelash Smoky Layers 007 and the ones are the right, I don't remember as I don't have the packaging for them anymore - they are Japanese eyelashes - soft fibers, densely grouped but less dramatic than Bi Foie's (see up top). Shu's Smoky Layer lashes are made of high quality fibers to form an intricately designed set. The shortest layers (top most ones) are criss-crossed and unlike cheaper lashes, the fiber lengths are purposely asymmetically  in small groups but perfectly symmetical as a whole. It takes a lot more time to put together something like this. The end result are dramatic but natural-looking lashes.

The Japanese lashes to the right are still good when you want something dramatic but not as exaggerated as Gi & Gary's Hollywood's - it has somewhat of a softer touch. However, it just doesn't have the same details and craftsmanship as Shu Uemura's. And visible difference is reflected clearly in in the price. Shu Uemura's Smoky Layers are $28 USD while the Japanese ones were somewhere around $10-15 USD. Plus, they look like they've been worn half a dozen times but in reality, it's more like 3 times. I've worn my Smoky Layers about 5 times since I got them and they are still in great shape.

The style of lashes you want really comes down to your preference. There is no right or wrong lashes. Think what is subtle, fun, dramatic and classy to you and apply those standards to lashes. Would you wear thick, long gamourous lashes to work in an office setting? Probably not. Just remember whatever you choose put on, have fun and feel confident!

How Much Should I Pay for a Pair of Eyelashes?

For your first pair, go for something around $5-$7. E.l.f. makeup has an eyelash and makeup kit set for $3. It includes a pair of voluminous lashes, an eyelash applicator and eyelash glue.

Generally, the more you pay for lashes, the higher quality they are and the longer they should last when well cared for (see Shu Uemura lashes above). Shu's false eyelashes are under $30USD while MAC's lashes are $16USD. I haven't tried MAC's false eyelashes so I can't comment on them but I've had great experiences using Shu's false lashes.

Check False Eyelash Talk 2 for more on false eyelashes. I'll be covering eyelash adhesive (glue) and how to care for lashes.

Laura Mercier Full Blown Volume Lash Building Mascara Review

I got a sample of Laura Mercier's Full Blown Volume Lash Building Mascara sometime ago and had completely forgotten to try it.

Product Description from Official Website Reads

Full Blown Volume Lash Building Mascara

Dramatically thickens, lengthens, curls and sculpts lashes with each stroke. The lightweight, nutrient-infused formula leaves lashes super-shiny, soft and clump-free all day long.

Ingredients

(Black): Water, Acrylates Copolymer, Glyceryl Stearate, Stearic Acid, Synthetic Beeswax, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, PVP, Paraffin, Aminomethyl Propanediol, C18-36 Acid Triglyceride, Lecithin, Propylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Sodium Laureth-12 Sulfate, Potassium Sorbate, Edta, Benzyl Alcohol, Gossypium Herbaceum (Cotton) Powder, Olea Europaea (olive) Fruit Oil, Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Oil, Panthenol, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Oil. (+/-) Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxide (CI 77499), Ferric Ferrocyanide, Ferric Ammonium Ferrocyanide, Carmine, Ultramarines, Bismuth Oxylchloride, Chromium Oxide Greens, Chromium Hydroxide Green.

The mascara went on smoothly and noticed right a way the forumla has a sheen to it. When applied to lashes, you'll notice some shine added to them. The mascara was more lengthening than volumizing for me. The volumizing part of the formula fell flat as I couldn't comb out my lashes and they began to clump where several of my lashes clumped to form a single thicker lash.

In the photo to the left, you'll see what I mean about the clumping with several lashes. This happens to some extent on all the mascaras but my favorites are, of course to a lesser extent. The clumping isn't terrible and from the side my lashes still looked lush and full.

Inpsite of some clumping, the mascara is very smooth making it easy to apply on and comb through the lashes. My lashes did curl up a bit more so I found their claim in this to be valid.

The bristles and placement are medium length ones seperated into dense bunches variety. It is easy to comb through your lashes with the product but the build up and subsequently combing-out of the lashes is not very effective.

I will continue to use this mascara until it dries out because while it's not one of my favorites, it does provide acceptable length and volume for me. I cannot tell if the clumping is a result of the forumla or a poorly paired brush wand, because while the product glides on smoothly, is not easily manipulatable with the wand applicator. It's all very contradicting you see as this is advertised as a "Volume Lash Building Mascara". The product as expected should be very easy to work through but I found the sculpting (comb-out) part to fall flat.

As always, try to grab a sample or at least try a mascara at the store before buying a tube. I could see this formula working for others even if it doesn't totally work for me.

Sephora VIB Mid Year Review, Very Important Beauty Insider

It's been over a year since I first became a VIB (find out what it takes to become one here) and as promised in the original post I am going to write a mid year review on the perks you get as a VIB and provide my opinion if it's worth it to become one.

[Update 02/13/2014]: My VIB Year In Review Post is finally up! Read my full year's worth of experience as a VIB here. Also covers VIB Rouge perks.

When I first became a VIB, I got a card for a free 45 minute makeup over and a 15% discount on my next purchase. In addition to these initial perks, Sephora advertised the following below as to what other rewards  a VIB would be eligible for. Let me go through each one of these with you!

Additional Perks as Advertised on Sephora's Website

Special Gifts:
  1. Complimentary gift sets -The only free gift set I've gotten is Fresh's Sugar mini lip duo on my birthday which is also available to Beauty Insiders. I did however receive a full sized Origins Plantscription Anti-againg eye cream that I talked about here one day when I went in-store to buy something else.

  2.  Makeovers on us - They offered free makeovers on Mother's Day this year.

  3.  One-of-a-kind products - Not sure what qualifies as one-of-a-kind products but from time to time they do give away free deluxe samples when you order online. I think Beauty Insiders are eligible for these as well.  As of July 7th, they are offering Philosophy's Time In A Bottle when you order online.

  4.  Seasonal discount - This one is fairly simple. They are referring to events where they give discounts on your entire purchase. The last seasonal discount took place April 22, 2013 and was on for the entire weekend. VIBs plus a friend got 15% off purchases and if you  went on the day the event began, you also got a free sturdy Sephora tote bag and some small samples. I covered this here.

 First Access:

"Get first access to highly anticipated launches, special sales, and other exciting offers." - There are regular emails on product launches. I can't always tell if it's first access for VIBs because they are emails that look like the regular emails that they send out.

The VIB Life:

"Coming soon" - Still coming soon.

Private Events:

"Attend private shopping nights and parties hosted by celebrities, founders, and top beauty experts." - There was one major private shopping night/product launch that I got invited to but this was all the way in Toronto so I couldn't attend.

Exclusive Rewards:

"Be rewarded with exciting beauty, shipping on us, double point purchases and more." -I've seen double point purchase offers once this year but don't recall anything on free shipping.

Beauty Concierge:

"Get answers and advice, and recommendations from dedicated consultants at 1-xxx-VIB-xxxx." - Have yet to call but I'll make a point to do so next time I have any questions.

I enjoyed the rewards and perks that come with being a VIB. It's still not something I'd purposely shop until I get though. My status is valid until the end of 2014 because Sephora is the only place that I know of in the city that carries Origins. You do save some money when you save your purchases for when there is a seasonal discount but make no mistake, there is no dollar value to the points you collect! You can only exchange them for the point perks Sephora puts out. Using your points to get point perks can work nicely if there happens to be something you want to try or maybe you ran out of a product and they had a 100 point perk of that very item. The perks do change often though and what they offer online is not always the same as in-store. This means you can't rely on the email notifications unless you order online. For in-store, you'd either have to go there or call.

The rewards they constantly talk about are there but more often than not, you need to buy something to get them. I would not have gotten Origins Plantscription had I not gone in that day to buy something. Would the staff have pulled me aside just to give me the gift if I hasn't queue up to pay and showed them my VIB card? How else would they know I am a VIB?

On a different sale occasion, I wouldn't have gotten a VIB exclusive Sephora tote bag if I didn't bought anything. You see what I'm getting at? The only complimentary gift you can count on to receive is the birthday one that comes once a year - far and too few inbetween.

I still think VIB would be more enticing if points had some dollar value towards at least products you use all year around like foundation, shampoo and moisterizers so you know that if you keep coming to the same store to buy them, you're saving in the long term. I think girls everywhere would be delighted if VIBs got little surprises in the mail or email (for in-store pick-up) on top of their birthday gifts. That would make "complimentary gift set" much less confusing cause I'm not sure if I've seen any free (no points, no purchase needed) gifts sets offered to me.

I'll be keeping my eyes and ears open to bring you more updates as we get through the rest of 2013 (it's July already!). Hopefully Sephora can make it more worthwhile for VIBs to continue to be VIBs!

Sephora Birthday Gift and Urban Decay Eye Primer 100 Perk

I dropped by Sephora this weekend and grabbed my birthday gift - Fresh Sugar Kisses Mini Lip Duo and a mini Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion.

Fresh Sugar Kisses Lip Treatment Tinted Review

The mini Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion is currently not being offered on Sephora.com or Sephora.ca so you will have to go in store to grab it. I am running low on primer so this was perfect.

Fresh Sugar Kisses Lip Treatment Review Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer

What I was really excited to try is Fresh's Sugar Kisses lip treatments wit SPF 15. The mini duo set came with a regular lip treatment is clear in color and the other was a rose tinted lip treatment that went on as a glossy rose red as you can in the swatch below.

Fresh Sugar Kisses Lip Tinted Treatment Review color swatch

They go on very smoothly and my lips stayed hydrated for a good 4-5 hours until I needed another application providing that I also didn't eat something during this time. Drinking or sipping water didn't really take the product off. The scent is fabulous. Smells like lemon and sugar!

I am super stoked that the lip treatments are paraben-free and also does not contain

- Sulfates
- Synthetic Dyes - the color tinted lip treatments do contain dyes but the clear one does not*
- Petrochemicals
- Phthalates
- GMOs
- Triclosan

*If you want to find out more how synthetic dyes are bad for you, check out David Suzuki's website. here. And just so you are aware, a lot of makeup with color contains synthetic dyes even including my favorite O.C.C. lip tars.

The Sugar Lip Treatments are great for those who wants something more hydrating and long lasting. There are less expensive alternatives out there that are also paraben-free like Rocky Mountain Lip Butters (all natural ingredients, $4.50 CAN) and Burt's Bees ($4.89 CAN). It all comes down to preference and how much you're willing to spend. In the meantime though, if you're a Beauty Insider or VIB, you can get the mini duo set as your birthday gift from Sephora. It's a good way to try before you decide.
