Tarte's Pure Maracuja Oil Review

I've been looking for a more cost-effective product to use on my skin during the winter months here. I have combination skin where my oily T zone doesn't need more moisturizing but the rest of my face does. My regular skincare regiment consists of three, THREE Origins facial moisturizers. One of which I use up every one and half to two months and it's costing me a small fortune to maintain my routine!

Unless you have very specific and special needs, I firmly believe there is always a cheaper and equal or better alternative available. And the good news is because there is a growing demand for clean, non-toxic products, there are emerging products and companies now catering to this market and bringing into mainstream spotlight, essential oils like Tarte's Pure Maracuja Oil. The oil is almost 100% passion fruit oil, completely paraben-free, phthalate-free and basically non-toxic.

Tarte's Pure Maracuja Oil Review

I got a hold of Tarte's Pure Maracuja first from a special deluxe sample pack. I tried the product, loved it and grabbed the full sized bottle during Sephora's VIB shopping event back in November.

Tarte's Pure Maracuja Oil Review deluxe sample size
The mini bottle on the right is from the deluxe sample pack.

What is it? Official Description Reads...

This nutrient-rich oil contains vitamin C and essential fatty acids to hydrate sensitive, dry, and acne prone skin, leaving skin even toned and smooth without a greasy feel. Pure maracuja oil is a hydrating treatment oil known for its anti-aging and healing properties for firmer, brighter, and smoother looking skin, and will not cause breakouts.

Ingredients

1.7 fl oz
Ingredients: Passiflora edulis seed oil, tocopherol.

formulated without parabens, formulated without mineral oil, formulated without  phthalates, formulated without sodium lauryl sulfates, formulated without gluten

Maracuja means passion fruit in Portugese. Do you think you'd be more or less interested if they called this Tarte's Pure Passion Fruit Oil? :)

I was hesitant at first to try this because it's pure oil. The last thing I want is to is clog my pores and create problems. I jumped at the chance when there was a special deluxe sample of the product where I could try the oil without committing to the full sized 1.7 oz. I found Maracuja to live up to claims of moisturizing without being greasy and use over time improves skin textures.

Tarte recommends applying 2-3 drops at night to clean skin, essentially replacing your bedtime serum or moisturizer and I did just that. I replaced my Origins Make A Difference Plus+ Rejuvenating Treatment AND Make A Difference Plus+ Rejuvenating Moisturizer and used the oil exclusively at night. There are days when the climate is extra dry here and I need to use some of my Origins moisturizer on the drier extras but the product works well on the rest of my face. I use 4-5 drops of the oil instead of the recommended 2-3. I would put it on the palm of my hand, warm it between my hands and put it on my face. I also use Maracuja in the mornings underneath my daytime moisturizer which is working out very nicely.

A few things I'd like to point out is you may not be used to how the oil feels on your face at first. The texture is completely different from serums or moisturizers where you can massage those into your skin. The oil is slick and while you should still massage it into your skin, it will feel like it's just sitting on your face for the next 15-20 minutes so you won't get that typical moisturized feeling. Rest assured though your skin is absorbing the oil. It just requires a bit more time.

The other thing I've noticed is while the oil works great for me, I've had the odd breakout in random areas that don't usually have problems which leads me to think the oil can sometimes be a tad too much some spots of my face.

Tarte's Pure Maracuja Oil Review packagingTarte's Pure Maracuja Oil Review glass dropper
The bottle and dropper is made of glass and comes in a nice box that is cushioned at the top. Should there be an accident where you drop the item, the thick cardboard around the box would absorb most of the shock.

The dropper is OK. If the oil's potency is better preserved when stored in glass, I am all for that, otherwise, I feel dropper to be cumbersome. You will find that there is excess oil dripping off the dropper when you pull it out of the bottle. To prevent waste, be sure to quickly move your hand underneath the dropper to catch the drops.

There are lots of good things to be said about Tarte's Pure Maracuja Oil but perhaps the best part is the product is suitable for a variety of skin types - dry, combination and even oily skin types. If you have very oily skin, I would first look into your daily cleansing routine before you start using oil to hydrate your face. If you have oily but dry skin, Maracuja is definitely worth a try. For those with dry, combination and sensitive skin looking for a form of natural hydration, this is a solid option to consider too. Try to put some on your hand/face at the store before you make a final decision.

Some of you might think $46 USD for 1.7 oz of passion fruit oil is expensive and to be honest, I don't know how much this is worth and how much it costs. The Amazon fruit is harvested, hand picked and extracted by Amazonian women (directly from package description) and the oil is undiluted, cold pressed before it gets to store selves. The fruit itself aside, the processing sounds like a lot of work. I hope the workers in the Amazon are being fairly compensated for their hard work. I do think however, Tarte is doing some good over in the Amazons so until I comes across similar-quality Maracuja oil at a lower markup, I will be happy to continue to buy Tarte's product.

Sephora Birthday Gift and Urban Decay Eye Primer 100 Perk

I dropped by Sephora this weekend and grabbed my birthday gift - Fresh Sugar Kisses Mini Lip Duo and a mini Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion.

Fresh Sugar Kisses Lip Treatment Tinted Review

The mini Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion is currently not being offered on Sephora.com or Sephora.ca so you will have to go in store to grab it. I am running low on primer so this was perfect.

Fresh Sugar Kisses Lip Treatment Review Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer

What I was really excited to try is Fresh's Sugar Kisses lip treatments wit SPF 15. The mini duo set came with a regular lip treatment is clear in color and the other was a rose tinted lip treatment that went on as a glossy rose red as you can in the swatch below.

Fresh Sugar Kisses Lip Tinted Treatment Review color swatch

They go on very smoothly and my lips stayed hydrated for a good 4-5 hours until I needed another application providing that I also didn't eat something during this time. Drinking or sipping water didn't really take the product off. The scent is fabulous. Smells like lemon and sugar!

I am super stoked that the lip treatments are paraben-free and also does not contain

- Sulfates
- Synthetic Dyes - the color tinted lip treatments do contain dyes but the clear one does not*
- Petrochemicals
- Phthalates
- GMOs
- Triclosan

*If you want to find out more how synthetic dyes are bad for you, check out David Suzuki's website. here. And just so you are aware, a lot of makeup with color contains synthetic dyes even including my favorite O.C.C. lip tars.

The Sugar Lip Treatments are great for those who wants something more hydrating and long lasting. There are less expensive alternatives out there that are also paraben-free like Rocky Mountain Lip Butters (all natural ingredients, $4.50 CAN) and Burt's Bees ($4.89 CAN). It all comes down to preference and how much you're willing to spend. In the meantime though, if you're a Beauty Insider or VIB, you can get the mini duo set as your birthday gift from Sephora. It's a good way to try before you decide.

Zuzu Luxe Oil Free Liquid Foundation Review

Here is my Zuzu Luxe Oil Free Liquid Foundation Review as promised. My Giorgio Armani foundation is running low so I have been slowly searching for a foundation made with mostly natural ingredients. I didn't want a foundation to contain parabens or any of the Dirty Dozen named by the David Suzuki Foundation. You can read about the Dirty Dozen here and how these chemicals commonly found in skincare and makeup products are harmful to the human body.

There is a great little online shop called White Rabbit Beauty that sells over a dozen different makeup/skincare brands that do not test on animals and out of that handful are some brands that are also dedicated to creating natural products. The other nice thing about White Rabbit Beauty is you can order samples to try- a very useful service. You can order 4-5 colors to see which one best matches your skin. You'll see below that the samples are large enough to see 3-5 times.

I ordered:

Zuzu's Luxe Liquid Foundation in L-6 and L-11
Alma Pure Mineral Foundation Powder in Neutral 2, Beige 2, Beige 3 and Warm 2
100% Pure White Peach Tinted Moisturizer

Zuzu Luxe Foundation White Rabbit Beauty samples
My samples came in some cute packaging with a hand-written note. I thought it was very thoughtful of them to write a note.

Zuzu Luxe Oil Free Foundation L-6 L-11 White Rabbit Beauty

My skin has yellow pigment with red undertones so it's not always clear to me which color would be the best fit. Zuzu's L-11, to my surprise was nearly a perfect match to my skin tone. They call it a neutral color but it has the right amount of red in it to be a good fit.

Zuzu Luxe Oil Free Foundation L-6 L-11 color swatch
Zuzu Luxe Oil-Free Liquid Foundation comes in 9 different shades. The lightest is Light/Ivory (L-3) to Dark Skin (L-24). In the swatch above, I have two colors, L-6 which is for light skin with neutral undertones and L-11 is for Light/Medium skin with neutral undertones. L-11 is the best fit for me.

The foundation is advertised as a medium coverage foundation but I would say it's more light to medium coverage. Unlike Armani's Silk Lasting Foundation that covers most of my blemishes, Zuzu's Liquid Foundation barely covers them. My skin looks fine from a reasonably close distance but if you pay attention, you will see the blemishes.

Zuzu Luxe Oil Free Foundation L-6 L-11 color swatch
Not a fan of how you can still see the red patch and red dots (from allergies) on the left side of my cheek. The product also looks splotchy on certain areas of my face inspite of my efforts to apply the product evenly. In terms of texture, the foundation feels creamy and light on myskin. The color is also one of the closest to my own color. I didn't even have to mix it with anything else.

Although Zuzu didn't quite work out for me, it doesn't mean I don't recommend trying it.Gabriel Cosmetics, parent company of Zuzu does not taste on animals nor use any of the Dirty Dozen and that is the first and foremost reason I wanted to try Zuzu. The product itself feels great and I was amazed by the color match. The only instances where I can't recommend at least trying the foundation is if you have a lot of blemishes and need more coverage or if you have dry skin.

Further to Zuzu's non-toxic goodness, their products do not contain (taken from Gabriel Cosmetics' website)
